At Junoberry Books, we are passionate about working with young writers to help encourage creative writing and develop the next generation of writers.
We look to inspire writing by offering a range of competitions and opportunities with varying stimuli and content, from the challenge of writing stories to exactly 100 words, to the freedom to write anything you'd like in our main short story competition.
See below for details of current and upcoming opportunities.
Our first competition of the year is looking for the best young poets and poems out there.
You can choose to either write a poem about one of three different given stimuli:
- New Starts
- Loss
- The Natural World
Or, you can submit a poem about a subject of your choosing in the open category.
There is no restrictions of the length of the poem.
The competition is open to anyone aged 6 to 18 years old, and there are three categories: Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 / Sixth Form.
Winners will have their poem printed in our poetry anthology, as well as recorded in audio.
Closing Date: March 3rd 2024
Each month the free to enter Genre Shorts challenge - which runs alongside Creative Jelly's Young Writer's Club - sees a new genre named with young writers required to write a short story that fits that genre.
For January, the genre is: Adventure.
Can you create a story that fits the adventure genre? It needs to be fast-paced, with action-packed plot lines and most probably will see your protagonist (main character) in a dangerous or risky situation.
We have 5 writing prompts that you can choose from, or you can write your own idea, as long as it fits into the genre.
Genre Shorts is open to anyone aged 6 to 18 years old, and there are three categories: Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 / Sixth Form.
The winner's work will be published as part of our Genre Shorts Anthologies (published quarterly) which will be made available in print and eBook, as well as recorded as an audiobook.
Closing Date: March 3rd 2024
Our first piece of themed writing of the year is on the subject of Mother's Day.
We are looking for Creative Writing that is about or inspired by mothers in some way. It may be a short story, poem, piece of flash fiction, script, memoir, speech or personal essay. The choice is yours!
The content of the writing is also completely up to you as well and we encourage all types of responses to this theme.
The competition is open to anyone aged 6 to 18 years old, and there are three categories: Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 / Sixth Form.
